In 2017, my youngest son underwent lifesaving surgery at only five days old. This surgery seemed radical to me and my wife and we soon learned that just ten years prior, the treatment for my son’s urological condition would have meant living with his bladder in a bag outside of his body for the first eighteen months of his life.
Instead, Dr. Roger De Fillipo (Dr. D) and his talented team at Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles, used state of the art technology that effectively changed the course of his life. And now, you would have no idea that my thriving preschooler’s life was ever in danger, or that despite the fact that his internal organs are still healing, he is able to live his life as a typical 3-year-old. The gratitude my family and I feel cannot be expressed in words.
Every year, one million children are diagnosed with kidney or urinary tract abnormalities, second only to cardiac abnormalities. If caught and treated early, not only are there a significant reductions in complications, but children’s lives can be saved.
The problem is that many communities don’t have easy access to a place like Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA). But with the advent of Telehealth technology, doctors in areas around Southern and Central California can access and consult with the best specialists at CHLA and steer their patients to the right treatment or to go to CHLA for immediate treatment.
For the past four years, my wife and I have committed our time and resources to help give kids all across Southern and Central California access to the same excellent care that my son continues to receive at CHLA.
We want to help start Dr. D’s Perinatal Telehealth program, which would be a unique and innovative program, possibly one of a limited few in the country to provide access and unparalleled care to patients who otherwise would have challenges in accessing CHLA specialists. Expansion of this program will undoubtedly change the paradigm of delivering medical care into the future for families throughout California.
